Troubleshooting Problems Taking the Salary Survey
The IEEE-USA Salary Survey application is designed and tested to work on a wide variety of platforms used by our members. However, it is difficult to account for every variation, old and new, in a rapidly changing technological environment. What follows is some information to help identify and solve the most common problems we have encountered.
Technical Configuration Requirements
The application is tested to work on systems that meet the following minimum requirements:
Supported Web Browsers/Platforms:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5+ for Windows
- Safari 1.2+ for MacOSX
- Mozilla 1.3+ for Windows/MacOSX
- Firefox .8+ for Windows /MacOSX
Other browsers (such as Opera) and platforms (such as Linux or Solaris) may work but have not been tested.
Browser Configuration Requirements:
- Cookies: Enabled
- JavaScript: Enabled
Login/Authentication Failures
You must use a valid IEEE Web Account login to access the Survey. You can establish or retrieve your login information instantly at no cost by going to http://www.ieee.org/webaccount. If you enter an incorrect login more than twice, you will be locked out of the system. You can reset by closing out of your browser and re-opening it.
Firewalls and Pop-Up Blockers
Firewalls are designed to allow data that is requested by the user to pass between the computer and the Internet and to block everything else. In order to prevent problems accessing the IEEE-USA Salary Survey, please ensure the following domain name is allowed by your firewall:
salaryapp.ieeeusa.org.
Unfortunately, most pop-up blockers do not recognize the difference between unwanted pop-ups and requested ones unless they are configured to do so. They will block anything they see fit with little warning (normally a small icon or short sound may be triggered to indicate a blocked page). Pop-up blockers can interfere with the operation of the Salary Survey in important ways, such as eliminating windows that explain that you are not being allowed to advance to the next page because a required answer was left blank.
As with a firewall, please make sure salaryapp.ieeeusa.org is allowed by your pop-up blocker.
You may have one or more pop-up blockers installed on your computer without even knowing it, since they are often bundled with other programs. Below is a list of common firewall and pop-up blocker products and either a support contact number/website or instructions on how to configure them:
- Google Toolbar: Contains a pop-up blocker that is turned on by default. Configuration instructions can be found on Google's About the Pop-up Blocker page.
- McAfee Products: McAfee provides several security options for your computer, many of which have pop-up blocking functionality of one form or another, such as McAfee Internet Security Suite and McAfee Privacy Service. Please check your product manual for instructions on how to configure these or visit McAfee's Support Page for your particular product.
- MSN Toolbar: Contains a pop-up blocker and can be installed alone or with MSN Messenger. Configuration information can be found on this page by clicking on the following series of links: MSN Toolbar Help » right-sidebar window will open » Topics: Using Pop-up Guard » Choose to block or show pop-up windows.
- Norton/Symantec Products: Many popular security programs by Symantec, such as Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall, also have the ability to block pop-ups. The firewall, should ask whether or not to permit a site or program by default. More information on the configuration of these products can be found in your product manual or on Symantec's Support Page.
- Windows XP Service Pack 2 Pop-up Blocker: Microsoft Support Page.
- Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall: Will always ask before blocking a site. More information can be found on this Microsoft Support Page.
- Yahoo! Companion: This is installed by default when Yahoo! Messenger is installed and contains a pop-up blocker (you can unselect this option during installation or uninstall it from your Add/Remove Programs list). More information on this tool can be found on Yahoo!'s Pop-up Blocker Support Page.
Server Timeouts
In order to prevent the application server from overload due to too many simultaneous user sessions, the session is programmed to time out after 15 minutes of inactivity. If you are timed out, you will get a page with the following error message:
You do not have access to the requested page [ /survey ]. Please log in and try again.
By going to the home page at http://salaryapp.ieeeusa.org and re-entering your Web Account login, you will be taken back to the page that you left off on to resume your survey.
Problems Submitting the Last Page
If you indicate on the survey that you receive company benefits, you will be given two benefits-related questions on the last page. Due to a quirk in the survey software that will be rectified for the 2005 administration of the Survey, you will need to specify an answer on the “other” option, even if you indicate that your employer does not offer it. Simply inputting “n/a” in the adjacent box(es) will allow you to successfully submit the Survey.
